Description

Belvedere is a charming, terraced holiday cottage situated in the pretty seaside town of New Quay (Cei Newydd in Welsh), and a 20-minute stroll down to the harbour (much less to the nearest shop and pub) where picturesque houses, pubs, shops, restaurants and cafés cling to the sides of the hills above the blue waters of Cardigan Bay. The town, once famous for smuggling, fishing and wooden boatbuilding, now offers a sheltered harbour and wonderful sandy beaches, and sailing, fishing and watersports are all available locally. The harbour wall is a great place to sit and enjoy an ice cream or local fish and chips, and watch out for the resident bottlenose dolphins. In season you can take a boat trip to discover them up close. Other wildlife along the Heritage coastline includes the rare chough, the red kite, seabirds and grey seals. The coastal path also offers unique wild flowers and diverse marine life in the rock pools. Poet and writer Dylan Thomas, lived in New Quay in 1944 and it’s easy to see why he loved the place and how it gave him such inspiration.
There are many interesting and beautiful places to visit including the university town of Aberystwyth, 20 miles, with its long promenade and pier, cliff railway, camera obscura and Vale of Rheidol steam railway to Devil’s Bridge. Cardigan with its castle is 18 miles to the south and the colourful Georgian harbour town of Aberaeron is just 15 minutes away by car. There is plenty of stunning scenery inland including Cors Caron, one of the few remaining examples of a raised peat bog in Britain. Lying beside the River Teifi, just above the small market town of Tregaron, on the edge of the dramatic Cambrian Mountains, there are excellent walks through the heart of the bog on a timber decked walkway. Belvedere provides an extremely comfortable holiday home, with sea views from some of the rooms.

About the local area

One of the most rural counties in Wales, overlooking Cardigan Bay, Ceredigion offers unspoilt countryside and uncrowded beaches. Much of the coastline is designated as a `heritage coast', and is one of Britain's most diverse areas for marine wildlife.

The coast is home to a resident pod of some 130 bottlenose dolphins as well as porpoises and grey seals. Eco-friendly boat trips to fully experience the coastline and its wildlife run frequently in the summer months from New Quay and Aberaeron. Hidden coves and sandy beaches also allow you to escape from the crowds.

Inland the countryside is a green vastness of hills and valleys dotted with small villages and market towns. There are several nature reserves, home to rare species of flora and fauna. Explore these on one of the many walking trails across the county and for the more adventurous; there is an awesome 35 km mountain biking trail in Nant Bwlch yr Arian high in the Cambrian Mountains. And afterwards, treat yourself to an award wining honey ice cream from Aberaeron!
