Nestled in Upper Cwmtwrch, the surrounding area is ideal for walkers. Being at the foot of the Black Mountain there are three walks onto the base of the mountain that are within 200 yards of the cottage, two of which do not even include walking on main roads. Quite literally, out of the gate and straight onto public footpaths. Cyclists are also catered for with the national cycle network routes with ’away from the road’ cycling is close to the property at Ystradgynlais and Cwmllynfell and is ideal for families with children. There are also some more challenging ’climbing’ routes for the more serious cyclist all within easy range.

If you just want to take in the beauty of the village or have a bite to eat then there are two food serving pubs within walking distance or have a round of golf which is just 2 miles away. For those wanting to explore, Pen Y Fan, the highest peak in south Wales, is only 25 miles from the property, and for beach lovers the Gower Peninsula is 18 miles away. Rhossilli Bay is a must see and has some fabulous walks across to Worms Head, just remember to check when the tide comes in or you may get stuck for a couple of hours! Another must visit is the waterfalls of Henrhyd, sure to make for a great day out exploring the natural wildlife and waterfalls. The National Show Caves for Wales are a short drive from the property and have some wonderful caves, as well as some amazing dinosaurs and play areas, a great way to spend the day with your children.

Holly Cottage is centrally located and accessible to the nearest town, Ystradgynlais, 2 miles away. The breathtaking Gower Peninsula, with its miles of golden beaches, is within easy reach, as are historic castles, and some of the finest waterfalls in the UK. Horse riding can also be found 5 miles away. About the local area

The Brecon Beacons National Park covers over 500 square miles, from Llandeilo in the west to Hay on Wye in the east. The National Park contains a wide variety of spectacular scenery, with mountains, waterfalls, lakes and caves all in the area. The Brecon Beacons is also home to many species of bird life and wild plants.

In the Brecon Beacons National Park, you will find small towns, quaint villages and tiny hamlets sprinkled across the area. Ruined Welsh castles, Celtic standing stones and relics dating from the Neolithic and Bronze Age are to be found, some inscribed stones date from the 5th and 6th centuries.

The Brecon Beacons National Park reaches its highest peak at Pen y Fan, over 2900 feet. The 'Beacons' were the sites of ancient signal fires. Here the views are awe inspiring. At the eastern edge of the Brecon Beacons, the Black Mountains (not to be confused with the Black Mountain in the west), form the border between England and Wales, a border country of gentle landscapes, with easy access to the National Park.

The Brecon Beacons National Park is popular all year round with climbers, geologists, bird-watchers and botanists. There are all sorts of activities to choose from in the area, walking is very popular, not surprising with over one thousand miles of footpaths to choose from. There are guided walks, one way walks (catch the Brecon Bus to take you back to your starting point), even walks for those with limited mobility.

Visitors interested in cycling, horse riding, gliding, sailing, windsurfing, canoeing and fishing will find they are well catered for too. The Park also hosts events throughout the year and is home to many interesting attractions if your feet get a bit tired!
