A small coastal village located on the south-western tip of the Gower Peninsula, Rhossili is conveniently located near the city of Swansea. Sustaining the power of the Atlantic, Rhossili Bay has become renowned for its superb surfing conditions.
Though fairly remote, this is a popular destination for holidaymakers, and has a few historical sites of particular interest. Visit the prehistoric remains on Rhossili Down, which towers dramatically above the coastline below it, or the remains of Rhossili’s pre-medieval village. 1887’s Norwegian barque Helvetica, one of many but the most famous of skeletal shipwrecks, can also be seen along the shoreline.
Popular with surfers, especially at the Llangennith (northern) end, the Atlantic swell provides surfers with big waves. Swimmers must beware though – there’s no lifeguard on this beach, and with a strong undertow, its waters can be dangerous. Visitors should obtain information and tide times before venturing into the water at the National Trust Information Centre.
Shore fishing is very popular along the Loughour Estuary to the west of Burry Holms, as is sea bass fishing up at Worm’s head. When being viewed from Burry Holmes, the sunset up at Worm’s Head is said to be magical, and these fishing spots lie along the paths of some truly beautiful walks around the south and west Gower coastlines.
Rhossili is popular with hang-gliders too - at 633 feet, the sandstone down provides an excellent launching point. With great watersporting opportunities and beautiful walks to be had, this area is perfect for a self-catering Welsh cottage holiday, from which you can explore the area at your own pace.
