A little way up the coast from the historic village of Rhossili at the north-western side of the peninsula, Llanmadoc and the nearby village of Cheriton lie a mere fifteen minute drive away from the southern side’s Port Eynon. Close to a variety of beauty spots and a great base from which to pursue the outdoors, Llanmadoc and the surrounding area has a great selection of self-catering holiday cottages to choose from.
Overlooking Whitford Bay, Llanmadoc’s stunning St Madoc church was said to have been built by the Celts in the sixth-century, rebuilt in the thirteenth-century and restored in the mid-nineteenth-century. The restorers’ homage to the original church can still be seen – a lettered stone which dates back to the sixth-century has been set into one of its windowsills. The village also overlooks one of two of the UK’s only cast iron lighthouses at Whiteford, which was built in 1865 – a rather haunting sight, it’s well worth seeing.
One of the Gower’s best kept secrets, this area is pretty rural and covered by lush, mature woodland, but also caters rather well to those who opt for a more remote self-catering cottage holiday here, with basic but ample amenities that include a village pub and shop.
Set at the bottom of the Gower’s second highest hills, Llanmadoc is a great place for walkers and nature-lovers. The Cwm Ivy Woods, surrounded by both wood and maritime reserves, can be accessed with ease from the village. Llanmadoc also lies close to the Cwm Ivy marsh, Landimore upriver and Llanrhidian marsh, which are collectively a site of great international importance for wading birds and wildfowl.
