Whether in search of entertainment or relaxation, this convenient location provides for all. Nearby Fishguard comes alive to the sound of music in June with what’s regarded as one of the best traditional music festivals in the UK: The Fishguard Folk Festival livens the streets with concerts, dances displays, buskers and song sessions. The International Music Festival of July brings world famous classical musicians to the area, while August’s Aberjazz Festival is never missed by lovers of Blues and Jazz. For those in search of coastal beauty, proximity to The Pembrokeshire Coastal Path ensures discovery of one magnificent sight after another: Amble to the sheltered horse-shoe bay of Aberbach for a peaceful evening swim or undisturbed sea fishing.
Or stretch your legs a mile further and discover the sandy beach of Pwllgwaelod and the opportunity to feast on the catch of the day at the Old Sailor’s Inn. Open for lunches and evening meals, it’s the perfect location for watching the superb sunsets over the Irish Sea. For walkers, dog owners, wildlife lovers and anyone with an appreciation of wondrous coastal scenery, the coastal path in this location, shouldn’t be missed. The three mile circular walk, around Dinas Head from Pwllgwaelod, takes in the highest point of the entire 186 mile path, a rich variety of flora and fauna, possible dolphin sightings and the unique coastal hamlet of Cwm Yr Eglwys.
The nearby village of Dinas Cross, just a mile and a half from home, serves up hearty pub classics at The Ship Aground and the Freemasons Arms and the small medieval coastal town of Newport, just 4 ½ miles away, offers a full range of dining experiences from traditional Thai curries at The Royal Oak pub to fine cuisine from locally sourced produce at Llys Meddyg (recently given a very favourable review in The Sunday Times). Newport is a coastal town with a quiet air of sophistication. It has all you’d expect to find in such a place; galleries, antiques, post office, bank, pharmacy, coffee shops, water-sports and more but without the trappings of mass tourism. The Newport Links Golf Course and Resort offers a superb venue for not only enjoying excellent food from its restaurant open to all, but also to enjoy an unrivalled, breathtaking view across the estuary to Newport town, the beach, sand dunes and the Preseli Hills: A wonderful place to watch the sun set.
Whether returning from a Christmas shopping day trip to Ireland, the spooky Halloween festivities at Oakwood Theme Park or September’s Really Wild Food and Countryside Festival in nearby St Davids, Yr Hen Efail offers a quaint, comfortable and homely haven for rest and recuperation from so many, all year round, adventures!
