Take a leisurely eight-mile hike down the road from the historic Welsh town of Pembroke and you will happen across Castlemartin, a beautiful spot on the peninsula set mostly within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.
Centred around a very prominent Norman castle, the village is also home to St Martin’s church – the church from which it derived its name – and which, very interestingly, contains a cross-inscribed stone pillar, dating anywhere between the seventh-and ninth-centuries.
Visitors to the peninsula are always struck by its stunning coastline – eight miles of it, to be precise – with much of it made up of limestone cliffs. Characterised by the beauty of its dramatic coastal scenery, holidaymakers can also enjoy a healthy wildlife population, with flocks of kittiwakes, guillemots, razorbills and choughs, to name but a few, nesting in the cliff faces and rocks along the coastline.
Cliffs, natural rock stacks, rock formations, sea caves and natural arches all serve to compound the drama and peculiarity of Castlemartin’s scenery. An important point to note is that the limestone cliffs are also home to Castlemartin Camp – a military base for the Royal Armoured Corps (RAC) which was set up after extensive mining of the cliffs in the 1930s. Visitors should be aware that certain areas are restricted, and the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path runs inland for a stretch.
The Green Bridge of Wales, Stack Rocks, St Govan's Chapel and Bosherston Lily Ponds are also popular sites for visitors to the area, alongside the Great Furzenip to Linney Head National Park guided walk.
Castlemartin offers dramatic scenery, wildlife, history and good access to the surrounding areas for the various outdoor activities on offer there. Explore the region from the comfort of your own self-catering Welsh holiday cottage, enjoying the luxury of affordability and complete freedom.
