Description

On a headland near the quaint fishing village of Little Haven, just one mile from the sea, lies The Barn; newly and meticulously converted into a stunning, character packed, three bed-roomed cottage. Within its thick, lime-washed stone walls its caring owners have created a light, airy haven of comfort and style with truly efficient ecco-friendliness. Whether enjoying the under-floor heating provided by the ground-source heat pump and solar panels, savouring a glass of the filtered spring water that flows through the taps or admiring some of the hand-crafted and beautifully up-cycled furnishings that adorn this place, there’s no denying the integrity of the environmental ethos that has shaped this old stone barn into a homely, healthy habitat for 21st century living. With dishwasher, plasma TV and even a MP3 player plug in point, to listen to your own music through the speakers in the living room ceiling; no comfort or convenience has been overlooked. Large French doors on either side of the living room offer countryside views and access to its large lawned area to the fore and to a sun-trap court-yard to the rear. With both of these areas invitingly furnished for al fresco dining, barbecuing beneath the vast star-lit sky is a must! While inside, the wood-burning stove, thick stone walls and a host of comfortable soft furnishings provide the perfect ingredients for cosy evenings in.

Glimpsed through the trees and hedgerows as you roam the owners’ land, the sea lies tantalizingly close. Just a mile of meandering through a peaceful country lane and onto the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, allows you to discover Mill Haven Beach; perfect for exploring rock pools. Why not opt into the Coastal Foraging course (offered, amongst other courses, by the owners of Mill Haven Place) and learn what’s nutritious and delicious along the sea shore. Little Haven, just a mile and a half away, serves other gastronomic delights from its tea-rooms, cafes, pubs and restaurants. The Swan, with splendid views across the small, sandy bay offers a great menu created from the abundant array of Pembrokeshire produce and the perfect place to witness the madness of the New Years Day swim or the mayhem of the August raft race.

Being just five miles from Martin’s Haven, don’t miss the opportunity to hop on to one of the 15 minute boat trips to the RSPB nature reserve of Skomer Island. In this world dedicated to wildlife, you’ll see seals, guillemots, razorbills, cormorants, shags and shearwaters. You’ll be able to get within a few feet of the puffins and hopefully sight dolphins from the boat. The vast expanses of beach at nearby Broadhaven and Newgale offer a host of water sports; from kite surfing to power boating, there’s something available to coax everyone into the sparkling blue waters of St Brides Bay. While the terrace at the Druidstone Hotel, a rambling Victorian building on the cliffs above the beach at Druidstone Haven, offers the perfect place to dine, often to live music, while watching the sunset across these waters.

No holiday in this area would be complete without a trip to St Davids, the UK’s smallest city. Dominated by its enchanting medieval cathedral, it’s a place that celebrates its historic, national importance and uniqueness all year round: From March’s St David’s Day celebrations, offering everything from the best cawl competitions to splendid cathedral concerts to the nine day classical music fest in May/June, its cultural significance is frequently lauded. From September’s Really Wild Food and Countryside Festival to a mass of Christmas festivities, there’s likely to be something celebrated or exhibited whenever you visit.

The county town of Haverforwest lies just eight miles from Mill Haven Place and with its Georgian architecture and remains of a Norman castle, it’s an intriguing place. The fortnightly Riverside Farmer’s Market, voted best of its kind in the UK and the weekly, vast, undercover car boot sale at the air field, are a bargain hunter’s dream.  But whatever your adventure and whatever the season, on returning to The Barn at Mill Haven Place you can’t fail to appreciate the comfort and tranquillity it offers; it’s undoubtedly a place you’ll want to visit time and time again!
