Carmarthenshire’s largest town, Llanelli, was once a booming mining town but now thrives on a variety of local industries including brewing, manufacturing, engineering and tourism.
Many visitors come to Llanelli each year for sporting events and the town’s rich sporting heritage is upheld by the Scarlets rugby union team, as well as the West Wales Sharks in rugby league and Llanelli A.F.C. in football.
Tourism has been a major focus in the development of Llanelli in recent years and Welsh cottages have been made available for people to visit the area on weekend breaks and longer holidays.
Local attractions include the Millenium Coastal Path that runs for 13 miles along the scenic Gower Peninsula and is popular amongst cyclists and walkers. Just outside Llanelli is the Pembrey Country Park, with its 490 acres of green parkland and the Blue Flag-awarded Cefn Sidan beach. The National Wetlands Centre, just one mile outside Llanelli, is managed by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust and is a great place to enjoy rare birdlife.
Annual events in Llanelli include the CAMRA Llanelli Beer Festival in August and the Wales Ladies Championship of Europe golf tournament.
