While the masses foolishly by pass Carmarthenshire on route to Pembrokeshire, this area remains the unspoilt secret of the discerning traveller and has only recently gained a fraction of the recognition it deserves. Wide open landscapes remain relatively undiscovered and thankfully, totally undeveloped. The 5800 hectares of Brechfa Forest on the doorstep, offer expeditions aplenty: Way marked routes take walkers from thick conifer plantations, over gushing streams to vast open vistas and the residues of ancient woodland. The mountain bike trails offer adventure for all abilities. The Derwn Trail provides a great introduction to the sport for families and novices, while the black graded, Raven Trail will put even the most experienced to the test. Whether horse riding, fishing, cycling or walking you can't fail to appreciate the incredible natural beauty of the area and the abundance of outdoor adventures to be had. Ty Mawr Country Hotel, just 1.5 miles away in Brechfa village with its menu of local produce and its own mirco brewery, offers a convenient spot for re fuelling and reflecting on fun filled days. Recently accredited as the Best Welsh Country Hotel of 2011, it's certainly worth a visit. The range of activities, facilities and experiences on offer within just an hour's drive of The Old Farmhouse are vast and diverse. From shopping in Carmarthen (Wales's oldest town and according to Arthurian Legend, birthplace of Merlin!) to sunbathing on the award winning Cefn Sidan beach to panning for gold at the Dolaucothi goldmines. The dog friendly, Black Lion in Abergorlech, with its hearty, traditional, home cooked food, just 4.5 miles from home, is a great place to stop on return journeys. Castle lovers are spoilt for choice but the majestic Carreg Cennen Castle, with breathtaking views from its battlements and cavens cut into the cliff beneath its foundations (take a torch!) is definitely worth a visit. With the attractive, ancient town of Llandeilo, with antique shops and galleries, being just a hop away, don't miss the chance to re fuel in The Angel Hotel with its delicious contemporary dishes and elegant, yet relaxed atmosphere. South West Wales and its sensational coastline, is also easily accessible from The Old Farmhouse, but leaving the cosy comforts and tranquil surroundings will certainly be a challenge for any guest!
