The historic market town of Mold is the county town of Flintshire and a major Welsh cultural centre. With a population of around 10,000 people, the town is well-equipped to welcome tourists, with plenty of shops, restaurants and traditional old inns. Market days on Wednesdays and Saturdays continue to attract people from miles around, as they have done for many years.
The area where Mold now sits has been inhabited for many thousands of years, a fact testified by the discovery in 1833 of a Bronze Age gold cape dating back to 1900-1600 BC.
The town became established around Mold Castle, which was built in 1140 but has since been ruined. What remains is Bailey Hill, at the top end of the town, that now provides a pleasant walk for locals and visitors, who can then enjoy a splendid view of the town.
Highlights of the calendar in Mold include the annual food and drink festival held each September, celebrating the strong appreciation of culinary delights in the town that are nurtured on the first Saturday of every month at the Celyn Farmer’s Market. In May, the townsfolk head to Bailey Hill for an annual picnic, where local musicians and poets accompany the enjoyment of fantastic local produce.
