Like its neighbour Aberystwyth, the mid-Wales town of Machynlleth contains evidence of human life dating back thousands of years. Copper mines dating back to the Early Bronze Age have been discovered within a mile of Machynlleth town centre. Over the millennia, the town has been inhabited by Romans, Welsh Kings and battling armies but nowadays a population of just over 2,147 enjoys a peaceful existence in the Dyfi Valley, just a few miles from the sandy expanses of Cardigan Bay.
Walking around the town, it is impossible to ignore the rich history of Machynlleth, with its Alms Houses, ancient market and the Dyfi Bridge, first erected in the 16th century.
A holiday in Machynlleth can be as busy and active or as placid and relaxing as you wish to make it, with many adrenalin junkies heading for the hills of the Dyfi Valley on mountain bikes or in their walking boots, while others prefer to explore the Tabernacle Museum of Modern Art or St Peter’s Church.
Whatever you choose to do in Machynlleth, you will be spoiled for choice of accommodation, with a wide range of holiday cottages available in and around the town.
