South of Llangollen, in the rolling, green splendour of the Ceiriog Valley lies the village of Glyn Ceiriog. Located in an area described by former British Prime Minister Lloyd George as ‘A little bit of heaven on Earth’, Glyn Ceiriog is the largest of a number of small villages in the surrounding valley, which is known as the Valley of the Poets after the three notable Welsh poets who lived there; John Ceiriog Hughes, Huw Morus and Rev. Robert Ellis.
It is not difficult to see where the poets got their inspiration from when you explore the valley, which is known as ‘little Switzerland’. Walks around the sweeping bends and spurs of the Ceiriog River, the woodland at Coed Collfryn and nearby hills like Llwnmawr transports visitors to a world that seems much further from the roads connecting the valley with cities like Wrexham and Shrewsbury than it actually is.
Formerly known as Llansantffraid Glyn Ceiriog, the village of Glyn Ceiriog itself has everything you will need for a self-catering holiday. You can stock up at the local butchers and greengrocers and head out to Y Dderwen (The Oak) for a drink of an evening.
Cottages in Glyn Ceiriog are popular with walkers, fishermen, mountain bikers and families who enjoy the pony trekking facilities in the area.
