The white limestone cliffs found in one of Wales’ highest villages earned it the name Bwlchgwyn, or ‘White Pass’.
The village is 333 metres above sea level and visitors can enjoy views across the Cheshire Plain to Jodrell Bank observatory in Lower Withington, over 40 miles away.
Bwlchgwyn is the starting point for many long walks across open Welsh countryside or alongside the River Gwenfro and the Nant-y-Ffrith. In the village itself, there are houses and cottages as well as a tiny church and an excellent pub – the Moors Inn.
The area of Bwlchgwyn is of interest to geologists, who can find rich mineral deposits such as silica in and around the village.
The city of Wrexham is six miles to the west, while Chester lies just 12 miles to the east, meaning the locals of Bwlchgwyn are within easy reach of shopping facilities.
