The pretty village of Rossett, which sits alongside the river Alyn is just a stone’s throw away. Artists and painters have for many years found the striking and unusual local buildings a source of inspiration. The Jacobean Trevelyan Hall is made up of drunken timbers that give it an attractive and unsteady appearance and the local Church calls to its parishioners using tubular bells designed in the 19th Century. There are several golf courses available for enthusiasts and the Rivers Alyn and Dee are great spots to fish as well as providing the opportunity for other activities such as kayaking. There are a number of good restaurants, pubs and shops and there are more to be found just down the road in the historic city of Chester. Chester also plays host to a variety of attractions such as Chester Zoo, boating on the river Dee, the Chester Racecourse and also its historic Cathedral to name a few. There are many other places of interest within easy driving distance, such as the Cheshire Military Museum, an innovative museum housed in a Grade 1 listed building. Erddig Hall, Gardens and Country Park at Wrexham is a fascinating place to visit as it captures the way of life of a busy household during the early 20th century and Chirk Castle dating back to 1310 (both National Trust).
Lying between Wrexham and Llangollen is the Froncysyllte aqueduct, designed by Thomas Telford, and has been designated a world heritage site in 2010. In Cheshire, Cholmondeley and Ness Gardens are fantastic and beautiful gardens to explore. Worth a visit in order to enjoy its spectacular views is Beeston Castle, with its exhibition, “The Castle of the Rock” which explains the 4,000 year history of the site. Also within reach are the Llangollen Motor Museum and the Llangollen Railway, meanwhile, the Boat Museum at Ellesmere Port in Cheshire is Britain’s premier canal museum. It is housed in Georgian and Victorian buildings and is full of fascinating exhibitions and traditional crafts with boat trips also available.
Another lovely family day out is the Greenacres Animal Park with lots of “hands on” opportunities for the children as well as tractor and pony rides.
