Flint (Y Fflint)

Wales....

Sitting so close to the border with England and within easy reach of Ireland has helped to create a unique atmosphere and a culture that has become something of a melting pot. While a core Welsh community in the town remains, there are also many other nationalities present, with Irish, English and Polish communities well established in the town.

The mixture of nationalities in the town leads to some interesting accents being spoken and Flint locals are often mistaken for being from Merseyside. Links between Flint and Liverpool are strong, with football legend and former Liverpool striker Ian Rush having grown up in Flint.

The town dates back at least as far as Norman times and the market that still runs every Friday was granted a charter in February 1278. The charter, which is the oldest charter in Wales, was part of the special rights allowed to the people of Flint by King Edward I, who also built a castle in the town. The castle was ruined during the 1646 civil war but what remains of it stands as a lasting monument to the town’s history and is well worth a visit during any stay in Flint.

From a base at a cottage in Flint, holidaymakers in Wales can explore the picturesque River Dee, access the nearby town of Mold or head south to climb Halkyn Mountain.
