On the edge of the Snowdonia National Park, the village of Abergwyngregyn lies in a valley with a spectacular waterfall at one end and the Menai Straits at the other.
Aber Falls is truly one of Wales’ greatest, most enchanting waterfalls. The falls are 37 metres tall, with the Afon Goch moving over a sill of igneous rock into a marshy area, before joingin with two tributaries to form the Afon Rhaeadr, which flows out to the Menai Strait.
The village of Abergwyngregyn, known locally as ‘Aber’, is located five miles east of Bangor and was linked to Chester by a Roman Road. The rich Roman history of the area can be explored at Maes y Gaer – a pre-Roman defensive enclosure on the eastern side of the valley, from which visitors can enjoy panoramic views to the Isle of Man on a clear day.
Remnants of ancient architecture can be found all over Aber, perhaps most notably in the form of Y Mwd, a circular earthen mound that rises six metres high and is thought to have once formed the foundations of a Norman castle.
Visitors to Abergwyngregyn can enjoy some of the best bird-watching opportunities in north Wales, with buzzards, sparrowhawks, peregrine falcons, pied flycatchers and wood warblers all nesting in the area.
Self-catering cottages in the countryside surrounding Abergwyngregyn offer easy access to hill walks, waterfall tours and visitor attractions like the Yr Hen Felin centre.
