On the south west coast of Anglesey lies the bustling, historic village community of Aberffraw.
At first glance, it is hard to believe this village of just 599 was once a capital but from 860 AD to around 1170, Aberffraw was capital of Gwynedd and became the most important political centre in medieval Wales under the Aberffraw Dynasty.
Lovers of Welsh mythology will enjoy exploring Aberffraw, which was the site of Branwen and Matholwch’s wedding festival. The Coastal Heritage Centre at Llys Llywelyn recounts both the mythical and factual histories of Aberffraw.
To the east of Aberffraw, at Llangadawaladr, sits a 12th Century church, built on the ancient burial ground of the Kings of Gwynedd. One of the headstones in the churchyard commemorates King Cadfan, who died in 625 and is described as “the wisest and most renowned of all Kings”.
The other major attractions of Aberffraw are its miles and miles of golden sand dunes and glorious coastal walks. The beach at Aberffraw attracts Anglesey locals from miles around during the spring and summer months, such is the high esteem in which it is held.
Fishing boats, canoes and sea kayaks use the estuary of the Afon Ffraw, which fronts the village, making Aberffraw a big draw for activity holiday-makers.
Good news for Aberffraw visitors in 2011 is that the village’s pub, Y Goron (The Crown) has re-opened for business.
