At the confluence of the Rivers Senni and Usk and a little way west of Brecon lies the village of Sennybridge. Here, you will find a wealth of ancient history such as Roman roads, prehistoric sites, and churches - the 15th Century church at Defynnog, for example, is the only one in Wales to bear a runic inscription upon its font. There is also a castle which is thought to have been built by Welsh Prince Llywelyn ap Gruffydd in 1262.
The village is also home to Sennybridge Camp and Army Field Training Centre (SENTA), and is one of the principal bases for the British Army’s Infantry Warfare Training in the UK.
For those with a taste for the outdoors, the woods surrounding the Usk Reservoir host an off road family cycle route, footpaths and picnic site. Fishing is also an option here, with a day ticket machine on sit, and in the spirit of the area’s military connections, there’s a paintballing site available to the more energetic holidaymaker.
Pure leisure seekers will find that the village has plenty of pubs, village shops, antique shops, tea shops, and even an art gallery. The little Welsh village also offers a wonderful range of self-catering holiday cottages, so a visit to Sennybridge is well worthwhile if you’d like a healthy serving of Welsh history, accompanied by a good dollop of Welsh culture, arts and the great outdoors.
