Straddling the border between Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion is the small town of Newcastle Emlyn, where myths, legends and a good helping of Welsh community spirit combine to wonderful effect.

The people of Newcastle Emlyn, together with the neighbouring community in Adpar, nurture a traditional feel in the town, running a market that has survived for hundreds of years and honouring rituals such as the Merlin and Dragon Queen Ceremony, held each December.

The 13th century castle at Newcastle Emlyn may be in ruins now but the legend surrounding it could not be stronger. The tale of the mythical winged Wyvern, which landed on the castle walls and terrorised the people of Newcastle Emlyn with its fiery breath, only to be shot down to die in the river Teifi, is one of the best-loved Welsh legends.

The river Teifi is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and wildlife lovers can follow it as it meanders its way through Newcastle Emlyn and out into the open Carmarthenshire countryside, spotting rare plants and birds along the way.
