With a population of just over 1,500, Y Borth (literally ‘The Port’ in English) is a quaint little village on Cardigan Bay, surrounded by areas of natural beauty.
The stunning views around Borth attract walkers, while the waves bring in the surfers and the expansive peat bogs and rolling sand dunes attract spotters of rare birds and wildlife.
The musician Morrissey gave Borth a somewhat unwanted place in musical history when he claimed his hit single ‘Everyday Is Like Sunday’ was inspired by the village. The lyrics of the song include: “This is the coastal town/ that they forgot to close down/ Armageddon, come Armageddon!”
Not everyone agrees with Morrissey’s assessment of Borth, as the village attracts thousands of writers, artists and surfers amongst a thriving tourist contingent each year. The village attracts big name acts from around the country each summer when Borth hosts Square Festival.
Long distance walkers taking on the Dyfi Valley Way pass through Borth, giving them chance to enjoy a cup of tea at one of Borth’s excellent cafes, or something stronger at homely local pubs like the Friendship Inn and the Seahorse Inn.
For those looking to enjoy a longer stay in Borth, self-catering accommodation is available, with cottages in Borth and the surrounding area offering great value and a delightful little corner of Wales that visitors return to year after year.
