With its sandy beaches and great amenities, there’s much to keep you in Aberporth but amble just 1 mile along the Ceredigion coastal path to discover Tresaith; another award-winning sandy beach, a tiny village that hugs the hillside and natural waterfall that leaps from the cliff to the rocks below. The Ship Inn, voted best pub in Britain, in last year’s Good Pub Guide offers great breakfasts, lunches and evening meals. With incredible views from its terrace it offers a fantastic spot for watching the sensational sunsets over Cardigan Bay and the opportunity to catch sight of the bottlenose dolphins that leap through its waves.
In this part of Wales, unspoilt beaches and stunning coastal scenery abound and the strong ethos of conservation extends to the local towns. Cardigan, just 7 miles from Farthings and also known locally by the Welsh name of Aberteifi, (meaning mouth of the River Teifi) leaves any visitor spoilt for choice when it comes to spending time. Its unspoilt townscape and rich heritage provide a nostalgic backdrop to a thriving contemporary culture of the arts, festivals and events. From August’s River and Food Festival to January’s Mwldan Film Festival there’s something in Cardigan’s annual events diary to appeal to all. Whether enjoying browsing through the galleries or playing a round of golf on Cardigan’s golf course with its outstanding views, there’s one experience that can’t be missed: A trip to this area simply wouldn’t be complete without a boat trip from the town’s newly created river side pontoon, to the mouth of the Teifi estuary and Cardigan Island. This Special Conservation Area teems with wildlife; Bottlenose dolphins, Atlantic grey seals, harbour porpoises, seabirds, rare choughs and skylarks can all be seen! For those that prefer terra firma, the same delights and more can be enjoyed at The Cardigan Island Coastal Farm Park in Gwbert, just 3.3 miles from Cardigan’s town centre. The nearby Cliff Hotel in Gwbert provides an excellent venue for an evening meal or a lunch-time snack overlooking the water and its spa facilities provide well for those seeking further relaxation and pampering.
Farthings, makes a superb base from which to venture into Pembrokeshire as well as Ceredigion. Miles of unspoilt coastline, pretty towns, villages, coastal pathways, castles and other places of interest can be found in both counties. The popular seaside resort town of Tenby lies just 39 miles away in the south of Pembrokeshire and St David’s, Britain’s smallest city just 41 miles in a south-westerly direction. A journey of just 15 miles northwards takes you to the Georgian Harbour town of Aberaeron, where you can meander through the interesting streets of multi coloured houses and along its pretty quay side. The Harbour Master at the end of the quay serves delicious lunches and evening meals which can’t be missed.
This area offers so much to the visitor that it would take even the most tenacious of tourists years to see and experience it all. So whether you wish to just relax on golden sands or discover some of the many delights from the doorstep, Farthings provides all you could need.
